Course outline

This program educates the next generation of dental professionals in the most advanced oral health facility in Australia. With small cohorts and dedicated, specialist teachers, students master the science and technical skills required to care for patients, and prevent, diagnose and treat oral diseases and abnormalities. Graduates are workforce-ready, with extensive clinical experience and in-depth knowledge of general practice in dentistry, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontics, prosthodontics, oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery, and public health. Note

Students attend the Herston and St Lucia campuses throughout the program and attend major external clinical placements in year 5.

Other requirements

On admission, the following requirements must be met: first aid certificate (including CPR); Blue Card; current status with respect to blood-borne transmissible viruses and tuberculosis (TB) and a schedule of immunisations. Prerequisites

English, Literature, English and Literature Extension or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 and 4, C); Chemistry (Units 3 and 4, C)

Additional entry requirements

Applicants must achieve a minimum (adjusted) ATAR of 99.0 (or equivalent) and must take the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). Information on the UCAT, including registration procedures, is available online at ucat.edu.au. Entry to this course is highly competitive. UCAT scores are used for selection. Career opportunities

Once registered with the Dental Board of Australia graduates may start private practice, work within an established practice, or join partnerships. Within the public sector, there are opportunities to work within hospitals, community health services, or school-based dental clinics across Australia. The Australian Defence Force also accepts dental officers on a short-service or permanent basis. Postgraduate study offers opportunities to develop specific interests and qualify as a specialist in a recognised field such as orthodontics, prosthodontics, oral medicine, dento-maxillofacial radiology, endodontics, periodontics, and special-needs dentistry.
