Course outline

By studying this innovative degree, you will meet the national accreditation requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership and can choose to be equipped to teach in either primary or secondary settings. Complete your degree in just three-and-a-half years, giving you a head start in your teaching career. In your foundation year, you’ll gain a thorough understanding of fundamental teaching principles from a global perspective, with a focus on digital learning. You’ll then select a major in either primary or secondary education, with the option to study a double major. You’ll also undertake professional experience in every year of your degree. This includes observation and participation in schools, practice teaching, internships and community field studies ensuring that you graduate with a wealth of practical experience and networks. Griffith University graduates are in demand and find employment in the independent, Catholic and State education systems in Queensland as well as nationally and overseas. Note

Students study over three trimesters each year, completing the program in 3.5 years. Students from any campus can travel between campuses to undertake their selected major or minors. All courses in the Primary Health and Physical Education major except 4082EDN Specialist Planning in Health and Physical Education are also offered online.

Majors

Primary majors: early childhood education (Logan, Online); health and physical education (Gold Coast); special needs education (Brisbane South – Mt Gravatt, Online). Primary minors: English education (Brisbane South – Mt Gravatt, Gold Coast, Logan, Online); mathematics education (Brisbane South – Mt Gravatt, Gold Coast, Online); science education (Brisbane South – Mt Gravatt, Gold Coast). Secondary majors: learning support (Brisbane South – Mt Gravatt, Online).

Other requirements

A Suitability Card is required; refer to institution. Students undertaking an initial teacher education program will need to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) to graduate from the program. Students are permitted three test attempts in total for each component. If students fail three test attempts for each component, they will not be able to graduate.

Prerequisites

English, Literature, English and Literature Extension or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 and 4, C); General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics (Units 3 and 4, C); Applicants must meet the minimum age requirements for admission, see the QTAC website for details.

Fixed closing date

Applications for the March intake close 31 January 2025. Applications for the July intake close 16 June 2025.

Additional entry requirements

Secondary education: It is recommended that students select teaching areas that they have successfully studied in their senior schooling. In particular, for the mathematics teaching area – Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics and for chemistry, physics or biology teaching areas – Chemistry, Physics or Biology respectively.

English Language Proficiency requirements: Apply to all applicants whose previous studies were completed in a country other than Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, United Kingdom or the United States of America or undertaken in a language other than English. Applicants must attain an IELTS – academic (or equivalent) of 7.5 overall (with a minimum score of 8 in speaking and listening, and minimum score of 7 in each of the other subtests), obtained within two years prior to the start of the program, or the successful completion of one year of full-time bachelor level study where the language of instruction is English completed in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, UK or USA.

Previous Education studies: If you have achieved a ‘satisfactory’ result for one or more component of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) at another institution, the ‘satisfactory’ result can be carried across with your program application. You are not eligible to apply for a place in the program if one or more components of LANTITE remains at ‘unsatisfactory’ after two test attempts for that component. Griffith University does not support reset of LANTITE test attempts.
